46,200 gallons of waste in Potato Creek

An incident at the City of Griffin’s wastewater tratment plant Wednesday afternoon led to the accidental discharge of 42,600 gallons of untreated wastewater into Potato Creek. From the plant, Potato Creek flows south into Lamar and Pike counties. Griffin blamed the spill on a ‘dry weather high flow incident’. The waste ran unchecked into the creek for some 20 minutes, beginning at 4:50 p.m. The plant is currently being upgraded. Griffin is working with the EPD on the problem.
