Arrest made after guns found in Pike first grader’s book bag

Two unloaded antique guns were taken into a classroom at the primary school Monday, Sept. 29. According to principal Sheryl Watts, the sheriff’s office was called and an investigation was conducted. The first grade student was enrolled Monday and visiting his class for the first time when the teacher discovered the weapons. The sheriff’s office’s School Resource Deputy arrested Jamie Hawsey, 26, and she was charged with reckless conduct for allowing her child to access the guns while unsupervised. She just moved to Pike County last week from Alabama and was enrolling her son. ’The firearms have been taken into custody by investigators and interviews are being conducted in order to determine how the child obtained them,’ said a sheriff’s office release. ‘School personnel located the guns in a first grader’s backpack as they were helping the child prepare for class. A school resource deputy was immediately notified and responded. At this time no students are in danger and school activities are proceeding as normal.’ ’All students are safe and we are on a normal schedule,’ said principal Watts. ‘A newly enrolled student brought two unloaded antique guns to school in his backpack. The student was brought to enroll this morning after students were in class. The guns were discovered by his teacher who checked his backpack as he entered the room with his parents.’ No other details were available Monday before press time.
