Basketball teams start season strong with three-game win streaks

Both basketball teams started the season strong and earned three-game winning streaks.

The Pike County High School boys basketball team is 3-2 so far on the season and they recently picked up consecutive wins against Academy for Classical Education (ACE) from Macon, Rock Springs Christian Academy and Crawford County.

“Last Saturday the Boys team won the Rock Springs Christmas Tournament. The victory on Friday against ACE snapped a 30 game losing streak,” said coach Craig Chatman.

The Pirates beat ACE 51-34 on the road Dec. 1 for their first win of the season and then beat Rock Springs Christian Academy in a thrilling game by a score of 65-64. The Pirates picked up yet another win as they defeated Crawford County at home by a score of 56-45 on Dec. 5.

The 2023 PCHS basketball team includes seniors, #2 Wyatt Pitts, #3 Jaylen Fletcher, #4 Calvin Hoopes, #11 Cade Moerman, #12 Tyson Trawick, #13 Ben Richardson and #22 T.J. Lawrence, juniors, #1 Damarien Ross, #10 Bryce Sammons, #14 Teriq Evans, #20 Dakota Headley, #23 Jalil Gogg and #24 Yadiel Rosado and sophomore, #5 Nazarious McDowell. The team managers are Hagen Fox and Godfrey Mahone. The head coach is Craig Chatman with assistant coach John Kovzel and athletic trainer Brittany Hammond.

The Pirates played Jasper County Dec. 8 and will play their next home game against Strong Rock Christian School Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Lady Pirates basketball

The Lady Pirates basketball team is off to a strong start with a 5-2 record to start the season. They defeated Crawford County 57-20 in the first game. They fell 78-39 to Creekside Christian but picked up a win in their next game over Rutland by a score of 50-45. After falling to ACE in a close 58-52 game, the girls picked up steam with a three-game win streak. They beat Trinity Christian 54-30, Crawford County again by a score of 39-24 and also defeated Jasper County 57-49.

“We are off to an amazing start. We are still very young, starting three sophomores and two freshmen, all of which lead the team in stats, including Kerrah Foster, Sadie Lewis, Cynthia Munoz, Rylin Cleven and Maliyah Holmes,” said head coach Selena Lewis. “Our leaders off the bench are Jaylee Britt, Aubree Reese, Austin Rae King and Elle Smith and the glue that keeps our team together are our senior leaders Kenleigh Smith and Jada Hawkins. We also have a few players (Paisley Clay, Kaylin Bone, and Addyson Norris) who I anticipate will contribute a lot to the team as they learn the system.” 

Coaches are Selena Lewis and Peyton Lewis and the team manager is Kinsley Martin.
