Braley died lonely but well-funded

When he hung himself on Georgia’s death row early on New Year’s Day, Leeland Mark Braley had not had a visitor who was not an attorney in two and a half years. Braley was not forgotten, however. His inmate account was kept flush with cash in the years since his conviction on Aug. 9, 1999 for the brutal murder of Zebulon insurance agent Kelli Hammond. Hammond was attacked Sept. 2, 1998 in her office on Highway 19 and stabbed repeatedly. At the time of the murder, Braley had previous convictions for entering a vehicle, forgery, theft by taking and burglary in Gwinnett County and had served time at the local prison facility. Braley was found hanging in his cell in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2010. His death has been confirmed as a suicide. When he died, Braley had just over $100 in his prison account. The account was closed and the balance turned over to his father, Larry Braley. Braley had two consistent cash contributors. Petra Hereman donated consistently in $50 increments. Additionaly, a man by the name of David Marsh completely funded Braley’s sundry budget by giving him $300 per month during the last year of his life. For the last five years of his life, Braley had one visitor who was not an attorney. Attorney visits are not subject to open records laws. Sarah Conklin visited Braley on July 4, 2007, April 1, 2007 and Dec. 31, 2006. The visits lasted from four and a half to six hours. Conklin listed her relationship with Braley as ‘friend’ on visitation records. She listed her employer as ‘SRMC’.
