After a big win last week over Lamar County, the Pike County middle school girls basketball team came up just short of a championship. Hubbard Middle School from Monroe County won 29-27.The game got off to a slow start as neither team got their offense going. In the second quarter Hubbard scored 14 points compared to Pike’s five points. Hubbard hit two more three point shots and the score at the half was 22-11.The fourth quarter was all Lady Pirates but they fell just short of their goal. With less than one minute left in the game the Lady Pirates had come within two points of Hubbard. Several turnovers spoiled their opportunity to take the lead. With 1.3 seconds left in the game, Lauren Duncan took the inbound pass and shot a three pointer that would have won the championship, but the shot went just off the rim as the clock expired. Duncan led all scorers with eight points. Leila Chambers and Kristen Beckham scored five points each. Asia Harris had four points. Ashley York had three points and Latoya King had two points to round out the offense.
