Cities to set budgets

By Dwain Penn Pike County’s cities are working to cut costs and streamline budgets before voting on millage rates. Zebulon will adopt their 2011 budget Oct. 26. Two public hearings will be held at city hall at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. and after the evening hearing, council will call a meeting to adopt the budget. Concord city council members voted to keep the millage rate the same as last year at 8.6 during a called meeting Oct. 5. The 8.6 millage rate will allow Concord to collect $65,000 in taxes which will be 30% of the total budget of $215,000 for next year. Meansville city council members discussed a proposed $59,700 general fund and $47,977 water department fund at their Oct. 11 meeting. The city’s proposed general fund budget will decrease $1,442 after cuts to office supply funds, telephone costs and maintenance and grass cutting fees.
