Commissioners to decide on shooting range request

Pike County commissioners held a special called meeting Friday, July 24 to perform an on-site inspection of a shooting range prior to making a decision on the special exception at their Tuesday, July 28 meeting. Check the pikecountygeorgia.com for updates after the meeting. All five commissioners traveled to the Concord area and visited different sites while shooting was going on at the range to evaluate the noise level from different distances. They were provided with a list of the weapons demonstrated at the unofficial range. Several law enforcement officers shot pistols, shotguns and an AR 15 during the weapons demonstration under the direction of special exception applicant Steve Burge. Ear and eye protection were required and he ensured all safety measures were followed. No decision was made at the meeting, but a preliminary management summary submitted by Burge was made part of the record for consideration during the July 28 deliberations. If approved, the range would have an 18-foot berm on three sides to reduce noise levels. Check pikecountygeorgia.com for updates on the commissioners’ decision.
