FBI pops Spalding firefighters for tipping drug suspects to raids; arrestees named

Two Spalding County firefighters have been arrested by the FBI and sources report the two were tipping drug dealers to pending narcotics raids.UPDATE: Those arrested have been identified.UPDATE 2: All arrestees in the drug raids have been identified and the list includes persons from Lamar and Pike counties.Bill Taylor of WKEU reports one suspect was arrested this morning at a fire station and the other at his home. They face a preliminary hearing in federal court in Atlanta at 2 p.m. today. One is apparently a battalion chief.Spalding sheriff Wendell Beam confirmed the arrests and is preparing a news release.UPDATE: Battalion Chief Tyrone Coggins and Firefighter Michael Owens are being placed on Investigatory Suspension with pay pending additional information pursuant to the Spalding County Personnel Policy. UPDATE 2:June 16, 2014NEWS RELEASESheriff Wendell Beam Reports:On Monday, June 16, 2014, an undercover drug investigation conducted by the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division came to a conclusion. During the investigation the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Griffin Police Department, The Atlanta-Carolinas High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), of Atlanta. The investigation concentrated on the illegal use and sales of methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana. As a result of the investigation over 60 people have been arrested (listed below).As a result of the investigation two members of the Spalding County Fire Department were arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigations. Dwayne Tyrone Coggins, Age 47, of 122 Rockbridge Loop, Griffin, GA and Michael Owens, Age 37, of 419 Palace St., Griffin, GA were arrested on June 16, 2014. Both were transported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Office in Atlanta, and later transferred to the U.S. Marshall’s Office.
