Scouts of America Troop 4650 and American Legion Post 197 will host a Flag Retirement Ceremony on June 14, designated as Flag Day.
The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion Post on Old Meansville Road in Zebulon.
“Everyone is encouraged to bring to the ceremony, or deposit the worn out and tattered Flags at the drop box outside the Post,” said Bryan Richardson of Post 197.
An American flag should be retired when it’s no longer a fitting emblem for display, meaning it’s damaged or worn beyond repair. This typically includes fraying edges, significant fading, tears, or permanent stains.
The Flag Code dictates that a flag in such condition should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. Scouts, leaders and others will take part in the special Flag Retirement to be held on Flag Day.
Last year’s Flag Day event saw more than 500 flags being retired, including several very large flags.
Flag Day is celebrated each year on June 14 to commemorate the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
