Foster homes needed in Pike County

The Pike County Division of Family and Children Services board met Aug. 5 and discussed a need for new foster homes in Pike County, among other business items.

“Our children that are in care are placed outside of Pike County and we would really like to keep them in the county or closer if possible,” said director LaShaundra Walley-Holmes. “We try to keep them within a 50-mile radius of their homes but sometimes that just does not work out.”

To become a foster home in Georgia, individuals or couples must be at least 21 years old, meet financial stability requirements, and demonstrate a safe and suitable living environment for a child.

Prospective foster parents must also complete a home study process, undergo background checks, participate in pre-service training and demonstrate a commitment to providing a nurturing home for a child in need.

Those interested in becoming foster parents can call 1-877-210-KIDS(5437) or local DFCS director at LaShaundra.Holmes@dhs.ga.gov or 404-387-2152.

The board also welcomed new board member Ashley Brown at the meeting. She lives in Pike County and is a lead licensed specialist at Bloom.

Board members also heard that fewer cases were reported over the summer months, with seven assessed in June and five in July. Two of the cases were screened out in July with the family being offered community support and resources. It was noted that April and May are months that normally have the highest volume of cases in Pike.

Pike DFCS is currently assisting families that require long term services, as well as families with children placed in foster care ranging from ages of infant to young adult.
