The Pike County Auditorium will be the place for family-friendly Friday Night Movies this summer. The movie series starts tonight, June 7 at 6 p.m. with the showing of Escape from Planet Earth starring Rob Corddry. Renovations paid for with E-SPLOST funding have transformed the building into a state of the art auditorium with a 172-inch Theatre Max screen and audio system. The Friday Night Movies will help fund any future improvements to the auditorium. The next Friday Night Movies event will be the showing of Oz The Great and Powerful Friday, June 14 at 6 p.m. ”We now have an up to date, state of the art performing arts facility to accommodate functions for Pike County Schools as well as presentations of the community,” said Sherry Westbrook. “The improvements under E-SPLOST replaced the curtains, seats, sound system, equipment and put in new carpet, theatre lighting, a concession area, ceiling tiles, fire alarm system and doors. The funds provided for repair of the roof, HVAC system, restrooms, stage floor, and foundation. Funds raised from Friday Night Movies will go to continuing improvements to the auditorium.” Concessions will be sold during the summer movie series and will include hot dogs, pizza, nachos, sno cones, drinks, candy and regular, butter and caramel popcorn. ”Friday Night Movies provides families entertainment for children and everyone in the entire family,” said Westbrook. “School personnel are present during the entire time with an usher moving throughout the theatre at all times.”Admission for Friday Night Movies is $3 per student, $5 for adults and free for children under 4 when they are accompanied by an adult. A special family rate is $10 for families with four members. Friday Movie Nights will host a double feature Friday, June 21 with the showing of Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Ice Age Continental Drift. Another double feature will be hosted at the Friday, June 28 event with the showing of Cars 1 and Cars 2. For more on Friday Movie Nights, go to pike.k12.ga.us/spotlight.cfm.
