Fugitive captured

After a long hot day in a moccasin-infested swamp, fugitive Billy Lee Owens was captured just of Hwy. 36 West not far from T.J Outfitters just before 6 p.m. Wednesday. Owens was captured by a member of a heavily-armed tactical team from the U.S. Marshal’s office not far from where he originally tried to evade Lamar deputies. He wrecked a truck and fled into the woods just before 7 a.m. Wednesday and was hauled in 11 hours later after an intense manhunt by dozens of law enforcement officers from multiple agencies. Sheriff Brad White credited interagency cooperation with the arrest. Owens looked exhausted and briar-worn but there were no other injuries. The manhunt caused a lockdown at Lamar County schools were summer activities including cheerleading and football workouts were underway but there was no evidence Owens was ever near the school complex. More to follow.
