Funds needed for middle school field

Members of the Pike County Touchdown Club are trying to raise $1,000 before March to sod a field at the middle school. The group has already raised $5,000 for the project to provide a practice field for middle school football players and a usable field for physical education classes and other athletic teams. ”Right now students are taken by bus to practice at the vacant lot in front of the primary school,” said Jeff Kenerly, president of the Touchdown Club. “If we could sod at least half the field it would save diesel fuel, allow more time for coaching the kids and the whole school will get to use it.” The field has been graded and an irrigation system installed for future use but it is not currently usable said middle school athletic director Jimmy Sessions. “We don’t use it very much because it’s not conducive to play on,” he said. “There’s just not a lot of grass out there. We really can’t take P.E. classes on it and we certainly can’t practice on it.” Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 1285, Zebulon, 30295.
