Program Challenge students (l-r) Rhiannon LeFeuvre, Scarlet Sharpe and Chance Moulder float the Flint. Several students wrote letters to legislators on the Georgia House Study Committee on Navigable Streams to ask them to protect both the waterways and the public’s right to learn from, enjoy time on and fish on rivers and streams.

Help local students learn about the Flint River first hand

Each year, a group of Pike County Elementary School students get to take a trip down the Flint River as F.R.O.G.s (Future Riverkeepers of Georgia). Usually, the group raises funds by hosting the Project Challenge Yard Sale. This year, Hurricane Helene interrupted plans and students and teachers decided instead to collect the items to be sold along with other needed items and send them to victims of the vicious hurricane that tore up many areas of the southeast.

“The Flint River has shaped Georgia’s history, landscape, and wildlife for generations – and now, it’s time to shape the next generation of stewards who will love and protect it for years to come,” said PCES Program Challenge teacher Ashley Wright. “At Pike County Elementary School, our gifted fifth grade students have spent the year immersed in an in-depth study of the Flint River’s history, biodiversity, topography, and environmental importance. But no textbook or classroom lesson can compare to experiencing the river firsthand. That’s why we need your help.”

To donate to make the trip down the river possible, make checks to Pike County Elementary School (Memo: F.R.O.G.s on the Flint) and mail them to 607 Pirate Drive, Zebulon, GA 30295.
“Together, we can give these students an experience that shapes their future – and safeguard the future of the Flint River,” said Wright.

The student group will be guided by experts from Fall Line Guide Service and they paddle through the heart of the river, fish for Shoal Bass at Table Rock, and explore the ecosystem up close using scientific tools like kick-nets to collect macroinvertebrates.
