High tunnel project can help local farmers

D&A Farm has been growing in Pike County for about four years. Now the Bentoski family is eligible for the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service High Tunnel Hoop System for Crops pilot EQIP program which will fund one high tunnel per farm. D&A Farm off of Highway 18 already has three high tunnels that help increase production of nearly 70 different certified organic items. ”High tunnels can add to production early in the season and late in the season,” said Alan Bentoski, who helps his son Dave plant and harvest the farm’s organic produce. Applicants need to be in production at least two years with established farm records. The Bentoskis must maintain records for three years as part of the program. Applications can be taken to the local NRCS service center in Barnesville for farmers in Pike, Lamar, Monroe and Upson counties.
