The Pike County Historical Society meeting will feature local resident Edward Bottoms as the speaker Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. at the J. Joel Edwards Public Library community room.’We’ll hear him present an interesting, lively story about the plant nursery business in Pike,’ said Chris Curry. ‘Edward and his family have been long-time growers, specializing in the production of fruit and ornamental plants that are sold throughout the country.’The story of Pike muscadine, peach, pimiento and other plant varieties goes back to the 1800s, gathering steam with the advent of the refrigerated rail car which allowed fresh fruit to be shipped all over the East. Edward’s story about muscadines is timely as this crop is now being harvested in several places in Pike.
