Homecoming parade ‘blacks out’ parts of Pike

Friday Night’s theme for the Homecoming football game against Upson-Lee is ‘Blackout the House’ and everyone is supposed to wear black to the game. The theme got started a little early. Sunday afternoon’s Homecoming parade blacked out all of Zebulon – including the sheriff’s office and 911 center – as well as other parts of Pike County with service through Georgia Power.

The blackout happened when tinsel streamers shot from a handheld cannon during the parade got caught in a power line and caused an explosion. At one point, there was a wire thought to be live that was across the Pike Billiards parking lot. The parade was haulted as crews worked to restore power.

The blackout lasted around two and a half hours and the incident knocked out power and some phone service.
