Homeschool students enjoy First Responder Day in Molena

The Molena Police Department hosted Homeschool First Responder Day on Friday, Sept. 12, drawing families from across the county for hands-on experience with local law enforcement and emergency services. The event was co-organized by homeschool advocate Amanda Huddleston and welcomed children of all ages to explore the vital roles of public safety and first response professionals.

“We’re excited to see so many children engaging with the work our first responders do,” said Molena Police Chief Matthew Polk. “This kind of educational outreach strengthens community bonds, and we hope to make it an annual tradition.”

Held at the Molena Police Department in downtown Molena, the day featured interactive stations where attendees chatted with officers from Molena and Zebulon Police departments, Georgia State Troopers, AmeriPro Health paramedics, GBI agents, Pike firefighters and representatives from the Department of Natural Resources. Children climbed aboard fire trucks, explored patrol cars and toured the Fire Department.

Many lined up to have their fingerprints and palm prints taken, try on a bulletproof vest, and pose for photos with K-9 bloodhound Buster, accompanied by Sergeant Campbell from Pike County Sheriff’s Office.

The grand finale came with the dramatic landing of Air Evac Lifeteam 153 helicopter from Fayetteville, after which curious youngsters and their parents talked to the pilot and inspected the craft.
Food and drinks were available for purchase from Diggity Hotdawgs food truck.

“The success of Homeschool First Responder Day shows how valuable events like this are for our community,” said Molena City Clerk Tina Lee. “It’s a great way to inspire young minds and foster cooperation between residents and first responders.”
