JOIN THE ADVENTURE: Sign up at library

Adventure Begins at Your Library is this year’s theme for the summer reading program at the J. Joel Edwards Public Library.

“What an adventure is it going to be! The program will have exciting new features and will engage whole families, kids and grownups alike. Each week in June and July will highlight a special kind of adventure: adventure in imagination, travel, outside, adventure in the dark, in scavenger hunting, and adventure close to home,” said new library manager Baylynn Strader.

The family adventures at the library will begin with the star performance by Lee Bryan the Puppet Guy accompanied by snacks, games, and fun on bouncy inflatables June 1 at 1 p.m. Whole-family programming geared toward all age groups will take place on Thursdays at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
The new tween adventure program will include children 6 to 11 years of age and will be held on Tuesdays at 11 a.m. The tweens will participate in Dog Man Extravaganza, Bubble Paloosa, tile coasters decorating, glow in the dark painting, cupcake wars, scavenger hunt with the book time capsule, constellation jar making, creating a memory board and competing in Library Olympics.

Pike County Fire Department will host the Splash Away at the library June 6 at 1 p.m. and Jason Clark from Southern Reptile Rescue will treat the audience to an informative show about snakes June 20 at 5:30 p.m. Pike County Extension Office and Farm Bureau will present their educational programming June 27 at 1 p.m.

Library Carnival will offer games, snacks, and drinks July 11 at 5:30 p.m. and musician Sam Wheelock will entertain his listeners with the One Man Concert: A Story and a Song July 18 at 5:30 p.m.

Special programming for teens will feature exciting activities picked out, approved and planned by Teen Advisory Board. The Teen Summer Reading Kick-off Party will include games, music, pizza, wings and prizes, and will take place June 4 at 5:30 p.m. Capture the Flag and other glow-in-the-dark games will be held June 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tiles for Teens will host painting of ceiling tiles June 18 at 5:30 p.m. The painted tiles will be displayed in the Teen Area for all to admire. Get Your Game Face On! will be an hour of exciting minute-to-win-it games that will take place June 25 at 5:30 p.m.

Teen Movie Night will show a film picked by Teen Advisory Board July 9 at 5:30 p.m. During Make a Masterpiece at our Teens Sip and Paint, soda will be served while teens create their paintings July 16 at 5:30 p.m. To conclude teen summer reading program, Cooking for Teens will feature some of your delicious favorites July 23 at 5:30 p.m. These activities require an advance signing up, so please register ahead of time!

Grown-ups will get to participate in the adventures of summer reading as well. Their short reviews of books that they read during June and July will be entered into Adventure Book Review Contest. Three book reviews will be randomly drawn July 25 at 5 p.m. and will receive a bag of surprises.

“The engaging and ever-popular Preschool Story Hour and Toddler Story Hour will continue to take place all summer long at their usual times, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, both days at 11 a.m.,” said Baylynn. “The Adventure Begins at Your Library summer reading program will end July 27 when participants of all ages can pick up their prizes. All exciting, adventurous events and activities are free and open to the public!”
