Concerned Citizens for Pike and Unit 5228 of NAACP are inviting the community and members of surrounding counties to attend their fourth annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 21.
The theme is “Freedom Is Not Finished” and the program will be held at 1 p.m. on the Pike County courthouse square at 16001 Barnesville Street, Zebulon, with speaker Reverend Anthony Wilson, Pastor of Antioch Baptist Church, 13871 Highway 19, Griffin.
“Please bring a chair because seating will be limited,” said Regina Bridges. “Vendors are invited to set up at no cost, however, a donation will be appreciated. Vendors may set up at 10 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be held at Fuller Chapel United Methodist Church. The program is slated to be a memorable occasion for the citizens of Pike County and the surrounding areas.”
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free – more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It marks the true end of slavery in the United States and stands as a powerful symbol of freedom, justice, and the enduring strength of the African American spirit.
“Join us for a vibrant community event as we come together to honor the past, uplift the present and inspire generations,” said Brenda Mathis.
