Katie Ward recently made history as a Pike County High School freshman for earning the school’s first state championship title in swimming. The PCHS swim team was created during the 2017-18 school year. Katie earned first place as a state champ in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 57.12 and earned second place (runner up) in the 100 yard fly with a time of 56.83.
Katie swam with the middle school in sixth through eighth grade and this is her first year swimming for the high school team as a ninth grader. She also swims year round as a member of the SeaWolves under coach Eric Snell and she has competed at several large competitions, including at age group meets for 8 to 14 year olds and at senior state (for 15 to 18 year olds) and sectionals.
In order to qualify for the GHSA state swim meet, swimmers must swim a qualifying time at a GHSA meet during the season. Katie was the first swimmer from Pike to ever qualify for state.
Katie is the daughter of Chet and Amanda Ward and the sister of Andrew and Liz Ward.
