Lady Pirates add wins to 7-2 season record

The Lady Pirates girls basketball team is first in the AAA region with a 7-2 overall record. The team picked up two more wins over the school break.

“The girls are playing well. We are starting to get some chemistry going and hopefully that will carry over as we start region play. The girls are working very hard and are improving skill wise every day. I couldn’t be prouder of the dynamics of our team and the passion our upperclassmen have for the game and how that trickles down to the younger players,” said coach Selena Lewis. “Our top scorers are Kerrah Foster, Maliyah Holmes and Sadie Lewis. Maliyah is also our top rebounder, while Sadie also leads the team in assists and steals.”

The Lady Pirates defeated Strong Rock Christian 34-19 on Dec. 15. Maliyah Holmes named as Player of the Game and she is averaging 10.3 points per game with 11.4 rebounds per game. The Lady Pirates also beat Salem High School by a score of 54-45 on the road Jan. 4. Aubree Reese was named Player of the Game and she has 1.6 assists per game and 1.9 steals per game.

“This is a great group of girls. They work extremely hard, and they push one another to play better,” said coach Lewis. “They enjoy each other on and off the court and I think that plays well into their success so far this season.”

The Lady Pirates played Mary Persons Jan. 9 after the Journal Reporter’s press deadline. They will face Community Christian on the road Jan.11 and Peach County on the road Jan. 16. The Lady Pirates will host Upson-Lee Jan. 19 and they will travel to Jackson for a Jan. 23 game. The Lady Pirates will host Lamar County on Wednesday, Jan. 24. All games are at 6 p.m.
