Lady Pirates finish 10-2 in region, head to playoffs

The Pike County High School varsity softball team will play their final regular season game of the year at home Wednesday, Oct. 11 against non-region opponents Northgate of Newnan.

The Lady Pirates will advance to the playoffs in one of four Class AAA Super Regionals set for Monday, Oct. 16-17 at a location to be determined Oct. 13.

“We had a great regular season and we just fell one game short of what we needed to win the region. This is a resilient group of girls that have had to face adversity throughout the season,” said head coach Don Hanson. “If we can pull it all together we can make a deep run in the GHSA State Playoffs. We have solid pitching and good hitters. We just have to get hot at the right time.”

The Lady Pirates picked up a win against region opponents Peach County on Tuesday, Oct. 3 to move their region record to 10-2 for the season. Haislynn Cromer struck out 12 batters in the 3-2 victory over the Lady Trojans, giving up only three hits over seven innings and walking one.

A ground out by Ashlyn Maddock put the Lady Pirates on the board in the top of the third. The team scored another run in the top of the sixth on a solo home run to left field by Linzie Davis. Lily Alpough, Katelyn Skinner, Linzie Davis, Ashlyn Maddock and Layla Moss each got a hit for the Pirates. Katelyn, Linzie and Ashlyn drove a run in each. Katelyn also stole two bases and there were a total of four stolen bases in the game.

The Lady Pirates lost 15-0 to a tough East Coweta team in a non-region game Oct. 5 thanks in part to a blowout second inning in which their opponents scored 12 runs. Haislynn Cromer allowed six earned runs over six innings, striking out one and walking one. Linzie Davis, Marissa Hanson and Austin King each had one hit for the Lady Pirates.

The Lady Pirates will play at home in their final game of the season with a start time of 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11. The Northgate Vikings are 15-10 on the season, compared to the Pirates’ 15-9-2 record.
