Lady Pirates move to 4-1 in region

The Lady Pirates varsity softball team is first in the region as they earned two tough region victories last week to move to 4-1 in the region and 6-7-1 overall.

The ladies faced Jackson Sept. 5 in their first region game of the week and sophomore Kerrah Foster pitched all seven innings, striking out three and allowing three runs on six hits in the 9-3 victory. The offense was hot as the Lady Pirates racked up 10 hits. Austin King and Linzie Davis both hit homers in the third inning.

It was a close game but ultimately a victory as the Lady Pirates beat region foes Upson-Lee 13-12 on Thursday, Sept. 7.

Kerrah Foster started, striking out six and allowing six hits and four runs. Haislynn Cromer pitched four innings in relief, striking out four and walking none.

The Lady Pirates took the lead in the first inning as Aubree Reese singled in a run. Upson-Lee put two on the board in the first and Avery Maddock singled to help Pike tie the game at 2-2 in the second. Pike jumped ahead in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on an error to make it 4-2. The Lady Knights made it 6-4 in the fourth as the home team allowed an error. The Knights added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth but the Lady Pirates battled back to score six runs in the sixth inning to tie it at 11-11. Aubree Reese doubled scoring two runs, Linzie Davis homered to center field scoring two runs, Marissa Hanson singled to score a run and Avery Maddock grounded out but got an RBI. Upson-Lee took the lead again in the bottom of the sixth at 12-11 but the Lady Pirates earned the win in the final inning, scoring a run on a pass ball and taking the win with a homer by Linzie Davis to left field.

The Lady Pirates played at home Sept. 11 and on the road Sept. 12 after the newspaper’s press deadline. They play at home Thursday, Sept. 14 and Monday, Sept. 18.
