Lady Pirates softball adds two region wins

The Lady Pirates softball team picked up two important region wins to move their region record to 6-1-0. The varsity team had a full schedule last week as they beat LaGrange 7-0 on Monday, Sept. 11, were rain delayed against Mary Persons Tuesday, Sept. 12 and beat Peach County in a double header Thursday, Sept. 14.

“Our Lady Pirates softball have been playing well lately, picking up a shutout win over LaGrange and two region wins over Peach County 4-2 and 5-0. Linzie Davis has had a hot bat and the long ball has become a major threat for our opponents when she is at bat,” said coach Don Hanson.

Lily Alpough hit a grand slam in the first inning of the Sept. 11 game against non-region opponent LaGrange. Haislynn Cromer earned the win for the Pirates as she had four hits, and no runs over seven innings while striking out six and walking none. Linzie Davis and Marissa Hanson led the office with two hits each.

The Lady Pirates were delayed by storms in the bottom of the fourth inning as they faced region foes Mary Persons Sept. 12. The game was in a 2-2 tie but will be played all over again on Monday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. on the road at Mary Persons.

The varsity team picked up two region wins over Peach County on Thursday, Sept. 14. The Pike offense was hot as Linzie Davis solo homered to left in the bottom of the second inning and Lily Alpough homered in the fourth, scoring three runs for the team in the 4-2 victory. Haislynn Cromer earned the win for the Pirates as she gave up eight hits and two runs over seven innings with eight strikeouts and two walks.

In the second game of the day, Kerrah ‘KK’ Foster pitched a no-hitter as she rung up 10 strikeouts in the shutout victory over Peach County. She gave up zero hits and allowed zero runs, only walking one batter. Offensively, Marissa Hanson led the team with two hits and Katelyn Skinner and Aubree Reese each drove in runs.

The Lady Pirates played the Whitewater Wildcats at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18 at home after the Journal Reporter’s press deadline. The team will hit the road for three games as they face Jones County in Gray at 6 p.m. Sept. 19, play Jackson at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 and play Mary Persons at 6 p.m. Sept. 25.
