Local FFA students host special Down on the Farm Day

The first ever Down on the Farm Day was held Friday, Oct. 24, and allowed special needs students to enjoy learning about agriculture from local FFA students.

“This special event was created and organized by our high school FFA officers Abby Martin and Anslee McLendon as part of their SAE project. Their goal was to give our special education students the same fun, hands-on agricultural experience that our second graders enjoy each year during Farm Day at Chestnut Oaks, and they certainly accomplished that,” said FFA advisor Shannon Bartlett. “It was a day full of smiles, learning and agricultural fun, one we hope to continue for years to come!”

Throughout the day, students enjoyed learning about archery safety and target bow use, poison ivy identification, seed germination, wildlife identification, fishing safety and of course, spending time at the petting zoo.

“We’d like to give a huge thank you to our amazing FFA members who helped make the day possible:
Bowen Cochran, Camille Cauble, Parker Davis, Ty Garner, Eliza Huber, Jude Jenks, Sadie Rose, Lelia Shaw, Addison Stanfield and Katie Ward,” said Bartlett. “We’d also like to express our gratitude to Cattle Creek Ranch for providing the petting zoo and to Caldwell Farms Beef and Scoops Zebulon for supplying lunch for all of our helpers!”
