Meansville says ‘no thanks’ to county fire dept.

Meansville firefighters will not unite with a newly created county fire district. The city council voted Monday, July 13, against consolidating into a county fire district. Four council members cast votes against consolidation. Councilman Al Milby abstained from voting. ”I think we’ve got the best fire department in the county, the strongest department in the county,” Mayor Gayle Burden declared. The council briefly discussed the issue before voting. None of Meansville’s 22 volunteer firefighters were present at the council meeting and no city residents attended. Pike County officials are wooing the municipalities to consolidate their fire departments into one county fire district created in June. Concord and Molena have already voted to consolidate their volunteer departments into the county fire district.
