A Memorial Day ceremony will be held Monday, May 27 on the Pike County courthouse square to honor veterans from Pike County who have served and died for America. American Legion Post 197 coordinates the event and will recognize all veterans from Pike who have died since last Memorial Day. ’We think it’s important to hold a Memorial Day service on the square every year,’ said Post 197 chaplain Ben Maxedon. ’We usually try to have a theme. This year we’re going to be honoring Korean War veterans. There are two people from Pike on the Veterans Memorial Monument who lost their lives during the Korean War. We’re going to share information about them and we’re asking any Korean War veterans to contact us so we can have their names and recognize them during the service.’Christine Colwell will begin the ceremony by singing the National Anthem. Participants are asked to bring a chair or blanket if needed. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held upstairs in the courthouse. Post 197 holds several ceremonies during the year to honor veterans and offers community service programs such as Helping Hands, for which donations are appreciated.
