Veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice will be honored on the courthouse square at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29 in a ceremony hosted by the Pike County American Legion Post 197 Legion Family. ’The Memorial Day program helps those in attendance remember and honor military service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for defending the freedoms we as Americans currently enjoy,’ said Post 197 commander Bryan Richardson. ‘As part of the program, remarks on the highlights of the United States’ global war on terrorism and the definitions of Blue, Silver and Gold Star Mothers will be presented.’During the ceremony, Lance Corporal Jeffrey Walker – who was Killed In Action in Iraq – will be honored with the reading of his military biography and Gold Star Mother Teresa Rutledge will be the program’s guest speaker. Veterans who died this past year in Pike County will be recognized and honored as well. A new wreath will be laid at the base of the Veteran’s Monument and Taps will be played in honor of all deceased veterans.
