Pike County American Legion Post 197 will host the Pike County Memorial Day Observance Program at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30 on the south side of the courthouse square in Zebulon.
“Five years ago, the guest speaker was Theresa Pinner, a Gold Star Mother of Jeffrey Walker, a Marine killed in action in Fallujah, Iraq on May 14, 2007. She was asked to describe what it was like to be a Gold Star Mother. Upon completion of her remarks, there was not a dry eye among the attendees. She truly gave the program attendees another perspective of Memorial Day. Post 197 has asked her to return, speak again and again bring true meaning to Memorial Day. Also, to be present at the program is Corporal Walker’s son, Conner who is now 15 which is also the 15th anniversary of his father’s death,” said Post 197’s Bryan Richardson.
In addition to guest speaker Theresa Pinner, the names will be read of all the Pike veterans who passed away since Memorial Day 2021 and three new names will be unveiled on the Veterans Monument. A fresh wreath will be posted at the monument and Taps will be played in honor of all service members and veterans who have died.
Seating is limited, so bring a chair. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at the Post 197 facility at 645 Meansville Street, Zebulon.
