Memorial Day program to salute heroes May 27

The Pike County American Legion Post 197 will host the 2024 Pike County Memorial Day Observance Program at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 on the south side of the courthouse square in Zebulon.

The program theme for this year is “Gold Star Families” and there will be a memorial tribute to Army Specialist Johnathan Davis who was killed in action in Afghanistan, followed by the definitions of Blue, Silver and Gold Star families. Members of the Davis Gold Star family will be the event’s guest speakers.

“The program in its entirety will be informative, patriotic, inspirational and moving. We encourage all Blue, Silver and Gold Star family members to attend as they will be acknowledged as part of the program,” said Post 197’s Bryan Richardson. “Additionally, as part of the program, a list of all the known veterans from Pike County who passed away since last Memorial Day will be read and honored. A new Memorial Wreath will be posted at the Pike County Veterans Memorial, followed by a moment of silence and ‘Taps.’ Seating is limited, so bring your own comfortable chair.”

In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at the American Legion Post 197 at 645 Meansville Street in Zebulon.

“Help us acknowledge our veterans and those military who died defending the freedoms that we enjoy today,” said Richardson.
