Pike County's Rick Rickerson brought attention to Mr. V's need for a new trailer and the community support was so great he was able to purchase a new dump trailer and a truck with new tires donated by Thomas Tire. Rickerson even helped cover the taxes and insurance for the new vehicles.

Pike man gives away truck, dump trailer

Meansville resident Rick Rickerson owns a dumpster rental service and he often visits waste disposal sites to empty them. That’s where he met Victor “Mr. V,” a man who used his truck and patched together wooden trailer for his business collecting trash and disposing of it for citizens in the Griffin area. Rick noticed that unloading his trailer by hand sometimes took Mr. V hours of hard work while a dump trailer could do the same work effortlessly in just minutes.

He was determined to get Mr. V a dump trailer and posted a video of him hard at work at the dump, unloading his old wooden trailer by hand while walking with a crutch.

“I made a post on a Saturday around noon about Mr. V to friends and our community. Less than 24 hours later, while having my Sunday morning coffee, I was shocked when I checked the amount donated was over $15,300,” said Rickerson. “This is what caring people and a caring community does for each other.

“This is not only going to make Mr. V’s life better, it’s going to allow him to work longer. And working is what he loves to do. He motivates anyone who watches him work,” said Rickerson. “He is an inspiration.”

Members of the community continued to help, including Thomas Tire who donated four new tires for the truck. When Rickerson found a truck that would work for Mr. V, the owner sold it to him for a discounted rate once he heard how it would be used. Even the cost for insurance and the tags were covered by Rickerson.

He met with Mr. V and others at the transfer station on May 18 to surprise him with the dump trailer while Mr. V sat on the hitch. He was most surprised when he received the keys to a new truck as well. He drove away with the biggest smile on his face.

“Smiles, laughter and tears were all at the scene that day,” said Rickerson. “It warmed my heart to see how excited people were and how they came together to donate and make this blessing possible for Mr. V. People were anxious to help. I was being texted several times a day by people anticipating the day and wanting to see pictures and video of Mr. V receiving his truck and trailer,” said Rickerson. “Please let me say a big ‘Thank you’ to the dozens who donated and thank you to the people who shared the post – and a couple of big shout outs to Thomas Tire Elevation Restoration LLC of Meansville who were very supportive of this event.”
