Pilot walks away from plane crash

A local pilot walked away after his small plane made a crash landing on the old landfill near the Pike soccer complex in Zebulon Thursday afternoon. The plane is a 1977 Varga Kachina aircraft registered to the First Flying Squadron based in Williamson. The pilot, Patrick McGinn, walked away after putting the plane down in high grass. He told authorites he was flying out of his home and was alone at the time of the incident. Witnesses said the engine backfired then completely shutdown and the pilot looked for a place to put it down. More to follow from Rachel McDaniel on the crash scene.
