Pirates get on the baseball fast track

By Greg Parrott After a dismal 0-3 start to the 2010 baseball season, the Pike County Pirates have quickly added two consecutive wins to their season record of 2-3. The Pirates upended the Upson-Lee Knights 8-4 and disposed of the Spencer Owls 16-1. On Thursday, March 4 the Pirates traveled to Thomaston to take on the Upson-Lee Knights at historic Silvertown Ballpark. The Pirates drew first blood in the first inning. Kody Adams was issued a walk to start the game and proceeded to steal second base. Blake Edwards then doubled to left field, driving in Adams for the first run. With two outs and Edwards still at second base, Nate Ferrell banged a triple to center field to drive in the second run of the inning. The Pirates led 2-0. The following day Friday, March 5, the Pirates hosted the Spencer Owls for their first region home opener. The Owls plated their only run in the first inning when the lead off batter hit a double off of starter Lance Shelton. The Pirates will play three games this week. They hosted Lamar on Monday, March 8. They will host Upson-Lee Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Then Friday, March 12, the Pirates will travel to Columbus to play the Jordan Red Jackets for a double-header starting at 4 p.m. ’We have turned the corner and we have figured out who we are as a team. This week will define our team even more as we face Lamar and Jordan in key region match-ups,’ said Hanson.
