Pirates open season at Taylor County tonight

The Pike County Pirates open the 2026 football season Friday when they travel to Butler to take on the Taylor County Vikings. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

The game is the first of the third season of head coach Stephen Holmes’ tenure here. He is 9-12 overall.

The Vikings are coached by first time head coach Jess Devoursney. They went 7-4 last year under former coach Brandon Byram.

Hope springs eternal and the Pirates are gunning for a winning record this season. They are coming off a scrimmage last week at Schley County.

“We finished the scrimmage with the best possible results. We came through it relatively healthy, had some good success and still have plenty of room to grow and improve. We need to make great strides this week because Taylor County is an outstanding team,” assistant coach Craig Chatman said.

Holmes, his staff and the players are looking forward to Sept. 11 when they play the first game on the new sport turf at the stadium.

“We have a lot of business to handle between now and then against some pretty good football teams,” Chatman concluded.
