Pirates soccer competes in Elite 8 of state playoffs

The Pike County High School Pirates soccer team advanced to the third round of state playoffs as they defeated Savannah Christian 6-1 on Tuesday, April 18.

Gonzalo Traschler had five goals and one assist in the post season victory and Jason Padron had the other goal. Luke Mann had three saves on the night.

The Pirates hosted No. 3 ranked Oconee County at home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 25 in the Elite 8 of state playoffs, after the Journal Reporter’s press deadline.

“These teams match up very well this year and we expect another epic game between the two. We encourage everyone to come out and make the atmosphere as great as the game should be,” said head coach Kevin Hobbs. “Kick off is at 7:30 p.m. and I want a record number of fans in attendance as this will be the biggest soccer game played at Pike for the boys side. Tickets may be purchased on gofan.co.”

Oconee is 16-1-2 on the season and averages 1 goal allowed a game while scoring almost 3 goals a game.

Pike is 15-4-1 and scores 3.6 goals a game while allowing just over 1 goal a game.

“Oconee beat Pike in the Elite 8 in 2021 in penalty kicks off of a controversial call. The game was tied 0-0 at the end of the second overtime, which caused the teams to go to penalty kicks. After both teams scored the first four shots, Pike kicked and the ball hit the crossbar, crossed the goal line and bounced out. Since there is no video replay, the officials call of a no goal stood. Oconee scored the next goal and won 5-4.”
