Pirates to host second round on April 24

The Pike County boys soccer team defeated Savannah Christian 4-1 in the first round of the GHSA state championship. The Pirates will host the second round of playoffs as they face Thomasville at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 24 at Pirates Stadium.

A win will put the Pirates in the Elite 8 of state playoffs.

“This year, our team has epitomized the essence of selfless play, consistently uplifting each other and maintaining a positive spirit. This was continued in our recent game against Savannah Christian. The boys entered the match with high energy, fully aware of the challenge ahead and refusing to underestimate their opponents. They exhibited remarkable discipline and teamwork from the start,” said head coach Kevin Hobbs. “The highlight of the match came when Christian Fowler broke through Savannah Christian’s defenses, courtesy of a superb assist from Luke Mann. Moments later, Christian reciprocated, delivering a sensational 40-yard cross that Luke volleyed into the net, marking one of the season’s most spectacular goals. The impact was immediate, visibly demoralizing Savannah Christian.”
The Pirates continued to carry the momentum as Jack Hammond executed a remarkable 42-yard throw in to Christian Fowler who converted it into the team’s next goal.

“Jack’s throws were so impressive that I measured them the next day to confirm their length,” said coach Hobbs. “Despite their fatigue at halftime, the boys’ spirits remained high, which translated into a relaxed and confident performance in the second half. We experimented with new strategies, and it was nice to see every player I called on performing at their peak – a truly gratifying experience for any coach.”

The Pirates will face the 11-6-1 Thomasville High School which is ranked 10th in the state during round two Wednesday, April 24 in Zebulon.

“Looking ahead, we face a talented opponent in Thomasville High School, ranked 10th in the state with a record of 11-6-1. They have faced tough competition and shown resilience. Meanwhile, our own team, Pike, stands fourth in the state rankings with a 17-3 record,” said coach Hobbs. “We anticipate a challenging match this Wednesday at 5 pm, ready to display the same teamwork and determination that have defined our season,” said coach Hobbs.

Christian Fowler is leading all of 3A in points, goals and assists, while Luke Mann and Sebastian Facundo are also among the top point getters, ranked 10th and 21st.
