Plea deal made in vehicular homicide case

A plea deal was made in Pike County court Friday, Jan. 8 regarding the death of 68 year old Henry Wellmaker who was hit by a truck and killed May 7 while riding his bicycle on Highway 18. The driver of the truck, Calvin Guy, pled guilty to vehicular manslaughter in the second degree and was sentenced to 12 months probation and a fine as well as 40 hours of community service. Wellmaker’s family and law enforcement involved were in the courtroom when Guy was sentenced. According to assistant district attorney Ben Coker, Guy had fallen asleep at the wheel when he struck the bicyclist and killed him. Sheriff’s deputies who responded to the incident said Guy was visibly upset at the scene of the accident and voluntarily submitted to a blood test for drugs and alcohol. ’Both parties wanted to resolve this as quickly as possible,’ said Coker. The criminal case was resolved before judge Tommy Hankinson but a civil case is also pending.
