American Legion Family 197 will hold a down-sizing yard sale and silent auction May 17-19 as they prepare to move into a new location at the Zebulon Opportunity Center. The sale will be held from noon to 5 p.m. May 17, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 18 and from noon to 5 p.m. May 19.
Items for sale include commercial kitchen appliances, office and home furniture, inflatable slide, clothing (including military clothing), military- related books, holiday decorations and more).
“We could use some volunteers to help with the Yard Sale/Silent Auction. At the same time, Post 197 will be moving items from the current Post to the new location. We need volunteers to help with the three day move,” said Post 197 Commeander Bryan Richardson. “Please contact me if you can help with portions of the three day Yard Sale/Silent Auction or the Post movement.”
American Legion Post 197 supports local veterans and hosts many events each year. Their lease has ended on the current location and they will move temporarily as efforts are made to find a permanent home.

“A couple last events are planned at the current Post, including the American Legion Family Memorial Service and Post Everlasting Ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 31. The event will honor six Post 197 members who have passed away since Memorial Day 2025, including Robert Achison, Billy McClanahan, Randy Martin, Dan Bond, Robert Walther and Matt Germain,” said Richardson. “All the families are invited and will be guests of honor.”
On June 14 at 6 p.m., the Flag Day Recognition and Flag Retirement Ceremony will be held at the facility, followed at 7:30 p.m. by a final Post 197 Rawlin’s Hall Closure Ceremony. Brenda Turner will be presented awards and there will be a full “To the Colors and Retreat” Ceremony as the Post 197 U.S. flag will be lowered for the last time at the facility.
At 6 p.m. July 2, the Post 197 Family will celebrate their new facility within the Zebulon Opportunity Center at Zebulon City Hall with a reception followed by a 7 p.m. Post 197 Opening Ceremony.
