Post 197 wants to help honor Vietnam veterans

American Legion Post 197 in Zebulon wants to help honor veterans of the Vietnam War in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of the Vietnam War. The Georgia Department of Veterans Service recently created the Vietnam War Certificate of Honor program to honor each of the 234,000 Vietnam War veterans. Members of the local Post 197 will collect the data needed and hold a special ceremony to present each veteran with their Certificate of Honor. ’We would like for all local Vietnam veterans to be honored and we need them to contact us with information on their service,’ said American Legion Department of Georgia 4th District Commander and Post 197 Adjutant Bill Payton Sr. ‘We will hold a special event on the courthouse square to officially present them with their certificates.’ Each certificate will be personalized with the Vietnam War veteran’s name, rank, branch of service and dates of service printed over the Seal of the State of Georgia and includes the official U.S. Department of Defense’s Vietnam War Commemorative Partner logo. Local Vietnam veterans can email the above information to pikepost197@gmail.com or stop by American Legion Post 197 on Old Meansville Road from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays and from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays.
