Raccoon confirmed as rabid in north Pike

Scott Meyers at Pike County Animal Control notified the Journal Reporter that earlier this week, a raccoon was killed by a dog.

“We took the head to the health department where Ben Trotter sent it off for testing. This morning we were notified the raccoon was positive for rabies,” said Meyers.

The incident occurred in the 500 block of Hemphill Road in north Pike. Meyers said it is the second positive rabid raccoon in the general area this year.

The dog was current on its rabies vaccine and will be getting a booster shot.
