The Pike County board of education passed a tax relief resolution to provide a tax break for seniors over 65 years old at the Dec. 13 meeting. The $15,000 homestead exemption would save citizens 65 or older $256 each year but will have to be approved by county commissioners and the Georgia legislature before being added to the ballot for residents to vote on it.The school board approved the resolution and it will be presented to the Pike County commission for approval. If it approves the $15,000 school tax exemption, Rep. Billy Maddox will work with the state’s legislative council at the Gen- eral Assembly to be drafted in legislative session and then placed on the local ballot for November 2012 so voters can vote on it.
