Sheriff Jimmy Thomas and county commission chairman Briar Johnson addressed the Aug. 18 meeting of the Pike County Republican Party and relayed some interesting information.
Sheriff Thomas noted his deputies worked 752 vehicle accidents during the year ending July 31, 2026. Of those, 111 involved injuries. He also said his investigators are now working drug trafficking and child molestation cases.
Another issue is scam calls from people claiming to be with the sheriff’s office who try to get victims to pay them or they will be arrested. The sheriff’s office never makes such calls.
Johnson noted the response time for fire calls has improved. Station 7 in Zebulon gets the most calls, he added. Johnson also reported DNR wants to put a boat ramp on the Flint River somewhere in the county and wants the county to maintain it.
Johnson said there have been three applications for the county manager job and he expects a chief appraiser to be hired next month.
