Standout Westerfield chooses Air Force Academy

High school senior Zack Westerfield has been offered an appointment to the Air Force Academy and will begin classes this summer. Westerfield competed against over 9,000 other qualified candidates and was one of some 1,600 offered an appointment and a four-year scholarship worth $400,000. Upon graduation he will have earned a bachelor’s degree and be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. He began working toward gaining an appointment to a military academy in his freshman year. Applicants are reviewed for physical abilities, academic strength and leadership capability. In his junior year he was the first Iron Pirate, an athletic achievement which puts strength, speed, agility and flexibility to the test. He was the 2009 varsity football captain, helping lead the Pirates to their best season. He was presented the Highest GPA Award at the annual Gridiron banquet in January for a 4.11 grade point average. He was one of eight members chosen by the coaches of Region 5AA for the First All-Region Team and was a nominee for the Wendy’s Heisman to represent Pike in judging. He also played baseball and ran track. Westerfield applied to the Air Force Academy in March of his junior year and the Naval Academy in April. Once he met preliminary academic criteria, he had to qualify academically, medically and physically. After meeting all three qualifications, he got letters from both the Air Force and Naval academies that he was guaranteed an appointment if he received the congressional nomination. Westerfield completed applications to the offices of Sens. Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson and Rep. Lynn Westmoreland. Interviews with their nomination committees were done in November and December. He received letters from Sens. Chambliss and Isakson a month later nominating him to the Air Force Academy and from Rep. Westmoreland to the Air Force and Naval academies. He plans to major in systems or mechanical engineering. He is the son of Carmen and Robert Westerfield and has a younger sister, Maria.
