Stop Diabetes event needs teams, volunteers

The Pike County community is asked to rally for the Stop Diabetes Community Walk/5K set for Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The walk to Stop Diabetes will be held at the high school track and entertainment and other vendors are needed. ’We’re organizing this walk/run because we’re passionate and proud to do our part to stop diabetes. We share the vision of the American Diabetes Association of a life free of diabetes and all its burdens,’ said organizer Nicole DeMarco. ‘We’re taking a pro-active role to change the future. We’re committed to walk, run and raise money, not only because 26 million people in the U.S. live with diabetes but we know some of them and want to do something about it.’ The first community Walk to Stop Diabetes was held in September 2013 and met the goal set by the ADA, raising $2,798 for diabetes research. ’Chances are you also know someone who has been affected by diabetes and you know how important it is to stop this disease,’ said DeMarco. ‘By making a donation or joining our walk we take a stand against diabetes and help the ADA provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure. We’re united in our desire to stop diabetes and we’re asking for your support. When we all work together, the power we have as a group far outweighs what any of us could do alone.’ For details, email demarconicole@bellsouth.net or go to main.diabetes.org.
