Students ‘Dig Into Reading’

More than 200 children have already registered for the Summer Reading Club at the J. Joel Edwards Public Library in Zebulon. Registration will be open through July 13. Children are encouraged to read whatever they choose, keep track of the time spent reading or listening to books or stories and reap rewards at the library. Library manager Donn Smith says children of all ages will ‘really dig the all-star line-up of programs and activities this summer,’ with special guests on Thursdays at 1 p.m. and family movies on Saturdays at 1 p.m. Readers will also get special prizes awarded at regular intervals. Those who complete the program will be rewarded with a Finale Party July 27, where they can win even more prizes, from Mega Maze to movie passes. For teens ages 16 and over the library is offering community service hours for time spent volunteering at the library that can be added to college applications and resumés.  Teens may assist with special projects such as craft preparation or registration and recording the progress of younger children. Special prizes and awards will also be available for volunteering teens. Adults need not feel left out of all the fun at the library this summer. Each time an adult checks out books, he or she can enter to win a basket of books, provided by The Friends of Pike Library. There will be a new basket each week through July.
