Several students were recognized for academic and extracurricular achievements at the March 13 meeting of the board of education. The board was presented with the Class of 2012 valedictorian and salutatorian by principal Mike Maddox.’We have a unique situation this year where we have four people tied with the highest GPAs in their class, including Sarah Heape, Alexis Brankel, Brittany Treadway and Emily Heape,’ he said. ‘It is my pleasure to tell you who’ll represent PCHS this year – Brittany Treadway will be salutatorian and Emily Heape will be valedictorian. I’m enormously proud of these four young ladies. They’ve worked hard for four years and each has chosen their own pathways for the future.’ Middle school student Jonathan Driver recited a poem for which he won first place in poetry recitation at RESA and received a standing ovation from the audience as well as commendation from board members and principals Dr. Vicki Smith and Mike Maddox.The high school math team was recognized by the board for placing first at the recent Griffin RESA district competition. ’It’s awesome getting up there and showing what we can do,’ said math team member Chris Johnson in response to questions from the board about defeating the other math teams in the region ‘“ including Fayette High School. Board members were also treated to a re-enactment of The Hungry Little Caterpillar by Tammy Gresham’s fourth and fifth grade class. The class won second place at the Griffin RESA Literacy Days, including students Isabella Burgess, Alicia O’Donnell, Madison Hilderbrand, Nathan Passmore and Tyshun James.
