Summer heat to pick back up; keep bills down

According to the U.S. National Weather Service, temperatures in the low 90s will return to Pike County and surrounding areas after more than a week of lower temperatures.

This year’s July temperatures in Georgia were the hottest in recorded history. Temperatures were two degrees above average, according to the National Weather Service, and July was the hottest month since 2016.

As typical August temperatures return, use the following tips to reduce electricity bills.

Minimize heat gain by closing curtains and blinds during the hottest parts of the day. Consider using awnings, solar screens or sealing and insulating doors and windows. Reflective window films can be applied to windows to reflect sunlight and reduce heat gain.

Maximize airflow by using fans, including ceiling fans, to help circulate air and make spaces feel cooler. When possible, open windows at night or early in the morning when the outside temperature is cooler to allow for natural ventilation. Open windows on opposite sides of the house to create natural airflow.
