Swimmer rises to the top

Soren Wood, 12, of Zebulon, swam a personal best time in the 50 yard breaststroke to finish second in the state at the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association class A state swim meet in Carrollton July 31. He also swam the 100 yard individual medley in which he finished 11th in the state and competed on two relay teams, 200 yard medley relay and 200 yard freestyle relay. He qualified three weeks earlier at the District IV meet held in Peachtree City. Wood also competed at the USA Swimming 14U state long course swim meet July 15-18 in Chamblee. He was swimming with Southern Crescent Aquatic Team, with which he swam year round. The long course meet is held in an olympic size pool, 50 meters in length. At this meet, Wood competed in the 1,500 meter and 400 meter freestyle, and the 50 meter, 100 meter and 200 meter breaststroke. He swam personal best times in all events. He placed 17th in state in the 100 meter breaststroke, 15th in the 400 meter breaststroke and 11th in the 50 meter breaststroke. Wood is home schooled and is entering eighth grade. In addition to swimming, he enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with his family. Wood is looking forward to the new swim season beginning in mid-August.
