Teams win World Series

Pike County baseball teams showed the U.S. their skills at the 2013 USSSA World Series in Mandeville, Louisiana. Three teams competed – the 14U All Stars, the 11U All Stars and the 7U All Stars. The 11U and 7U All Star teams were both undefeated as they won the World Series championship. The teams were awarded with plaques for each player and an almost 7 foot tall trophy that had to be disassembled to return to Pike County. The 14U All Star team came in third place in their age group. The 11U All Stars beat five teams en route to the World Series championship and were undefeated in the tournament. They defeated Zachary 8-7, St. Bernard Parish 7-3, the Bayou Bengels 6-1, the South Lafourche Tarpons 4-2 and Zachary 9-1 in the championship game. The 11U All Stars showcased oustanding offensive and defensive plays. The score was 4-2 as they faced off against the number one seeded team the South Lafourche Parish Tarpons in the semi-final game. In the last inning with one out and Tarpons runners on second and third base, a line drive was hit to third baseman Aidan Whitley. He caught the ball and tagged the runner off third to end the game with a double play. In the same game against the Tarpons, Zach Hampton hit an inside-the-park home run that bounced off the top of the fence, about 300 feet from home plate. The Pike County 7U All Stars were also undefeated in the USSSA World Series championship in Mandeville, Louisiana. The team defeated the Harahan 7s by 15-7, the LPR Fury 12-3, the SBBA Steel 6-5 and SBBA Steel 12-4 in the championship game. Jackson Blakely, son of BG and Tricia Blakely, hit three home runs in bracket play and one in a pool game.
